Before 1900,
frequent natural fires were important in determining the
diversity and distribution of plant species in Florida.
Since then, roads, cities and cultivated areas have created
many man-made barriers, and as a result dramatically changed
the frequency of natural fires. Many species, like longleaf
pines and Florida scrub jays, have adapted to and depend on
fire for survival. Therefore, fire is essential for
maintaining the biodiversity throughout many of Florida’s
habitats.

Prescribed fires mimic natural fire conditions to help
prevent catastrophic wildfires. This versatile and cost
effective land management tool confines fire to a particular
landscape under specific conditions and with precautionary
measures in order to accomplish planned objectives. In this
way, it reduces hazardous fire conditions and provides
increased protection to people, property and the
environment.
Since 2002,
Sarasota County’s prescribed burn program has helped protect
nearly 67,000 acres on 25 different natural areas. The
program’s team, led by two Sarasota County Fire Department
Mitigation Specialists, consists of twenty highly skilled
staff members with specialized training.
Sarasota County
is one of more than 30 different entities that the Florida
Division of Forestry authorizes to conduct burns within
Sarasota County. When planning a prescribed burn, the
program’s team makes safety a top priority by considering
ten different weather parameters and environmental
conditions. These standards often exceed state minimum
requirements for obtaining authorization.
