Sarasota County Fire Department’s recruitment
process requires candidates to complete the following areas.
- Written examination
- Physical agility test
- Fire Chief’s interview
To be considered for employment, all
candidates must participate in and successfully complete all
areas of the recruitment process. Individual combined scores
will be used to identify placement on the job placement list.
Candidates must also pass driving and background checks
Written Examination
Our written examinations are purchased and
validated through the International Public Management
Association for Human Resources (IPMA). IPMA has developed
assessment products for fire, police, correctional, dispatcher
and administrative arenas for more than fifty years. The
examination has a total of ninety (90) multiple-choice
questions. You are allowed two (2) hours for this examination
and are required to obtain a minimum score of eighty percent
(80%) to progress to the next step of the process. The outline
of test areas is as follows:

• Reading Gauges
• Applying Basic Math Rules
• Mechanical Aptitude
• Spatial Sense
• Map Reading
• Vocabulary
