| Historic Designation
Application and Instructions |
Question No. 1
Owners and authorized agent's affidavit
By signing the application and having it notarized the owner is
applying for historic designation and acknowledges those
benefits and restriction outlined in Article IV of chapter 66 of
the Sarasota county Code. The owner's signature also provides
authorization for county staff members to conduct a site visit
during the application process. If applicable, the owner's
signature also designates an agent who is authorized to act on
the owner’s behalf.
Question No. 2
Period(s) of significance
Enter the dates for one or more periods of time when the
property attained the significance which qualifies it for local
historic designation. The period of significance is the length
of time when a property was associated with important events,
activities or persons, or attained the characteristics which
qualify it for historic designation. It usually begins with the
date when significant events began giving the property its
historic significance; this is often the date of construction.
Question No. 3
Historical and architectural information
Information on the architect, and/or builder if known, year of
construction, architectural style and construction materials.
Question No. 4
Current and historic use
Select the historic use which occurred during the period of
significance noted in question 2. Describe any alterations or
additions which have been made to the building since its date of
construction.
Question No. 5
Proposed name of structure
Select the name which best reflects the property's historical
importance or was commonly used for the property during the
period of significance noted in question 2. Properties may be
named for persons, events, characteristics, functions, or
historic associations. If a property is significant for more
than one person, choose the most prominent. If the persons are
equally important, include as many names as appropriate e.g.
John and Mary Doe.
Question No. 6
Integrity
A site, building, structure, object, or district must possess at
least three of the following attributes of integrity: location,
design, setting, material, workmanship, feeling or association
to be considered for historic designation. One way to measure
integrity is by the ability of the resource to convey its
historical significance with its physical appearance.
Question No. 7
Historic designation criteria
In addition to integrity the resource must meet one of the
criterion listed in question 6. The applicant should refer to
National Register Bulletin 15 "How to apply the National
Register Criteria for Evaluation.” when completing this
application. This bulletin is available free from the National
Park Service by writing them at P.O. Box 37127, Mail Stop 413
Washington, D.C. 20013-7127 it is also on file at the History
Center.
Question No. 8
Research report
Accompanying this application must be a brief research report
with complete citations which provides information on the
history and architecture of the subject structure(s). Applicants
who are unfamiliar with requirements of the Sarasota County
Historic Designation program are urged to look at sample reports
and consult with County staff before preparing a submittal.
Reference books and samples of historic designation reports are
available at the Sarasota County History Center, 701 N. Tamiami
Trail, (941) 861-1181. The designation report should have two
major sections; historical and architectural.
The historical section of the designation report should include
an explanation of the general historical context of the
neighborhood during the period of significance, and a specific
description of the history of the structure during the same
period of time including information on the occupants, owners
and any significant events. If one of the criterion selected for
historic designation has to do with the history of the
structure, justification for the selection of this criterion
should also be addressed in this section of the report.
The architectural section of the report should include a
statement of the structure's architectural style and
justification for this determination. Also, an architectural
description of the structure is required beginning with a
summary paragraph that creates a rough "sketch" of the building
and its site, followed by a more detailed description.
In the summary paragraph describe the general characteristics of
the structure including its overall shape and arrangement of
interior spaces, the number of stories, the construction
materials, roof shape, and structural system.
In the detailed description describe the building in a logical
sequence for instance from the ground up, or each building
elevation. Describe specific features such as porches, windows,
doors, and chimneys, by type, location, number, material, and
condition. Include a description of important exterior
decorative elements such as door surrounds, or architectural
details, and significant interior features such as stairways,
flooring and beams.
In the report clearly distinguish between the original
appearance of the structure and the current appearance providing
information on when changes were made and the sources for this
information.
This section of the report must demonstrate that the resource
possesses at least three attributes of integrity: location,
design, setting, materials or workmanship by remaining
physically intact enough to convey its historic significance. In
addition if one of the criteria selected for historic
designation has to do with the architectural style of the
building or the significance of the builder or architect,
address this specifically in this section of the report.

or interior details. Use the photos to supplement the
architectural description as necessary, photo references may be

property, name of the photographer, date of the photograph, and
