Sarasota County’s Criminal Justice Commission (CJC) is
responsible for overseeing an efficient criminal justice
system and ensuring public safety.
Jail Planning
A jail is a vital element in providing a safe community, but
it’s also an expensive resource. Jail overcrowding has
become the major challenge for the CJC in meeting its
responsibility. The CJC has been engaged in a planning
process which, along with many other system improvements,
includes the construction of new correctional facilities.
Community Corrections
As part of planning a future criminal justice system, the
CJC has endorsed the concept of a community corrections
center. A community correction center offers our community
increased public safety and lower cost compared to
traditional incarceration, among other benefits. A community
corrections center’s primary focus is treatment and
rehabilitation, rather than incarceration, for people who
are finishing a local jail sentence or are on community
supervision.
