What does
the Charter do?
The Charter establishes the
framework for the power and scope of Sarasota County government,
its organization, elections, finance and Charter revisions.
What does
the Charter Review Board
do?
In addition to the Sarasota
County Commission, the Charter Review Board is authorized to
review and recommend changes to the County Charter. The Charter
Review Board is not the reviewing body for Commission-proposed
amendments.
How is
the Charter amended?
The Charter is amended by
submitting proposed amendments to voters at a referendum
election. Amendments to the Charter may be proposed four ways:
- A petition signed by at
least 5 percent of the number of registered voters in
Sarasota County.
- A special law enacted
by the legislature.
- An ordinance adopted by
the Board of County Commissioners.
- A recommendation by the
Charter Review Board.
Except for special laws
enacted by the legislature, the County Commission must adopt an
ordinance or resolution that includes the ballot language for a
proposed Charter amendment and calls for the special referendum
election. The Supervisor of Elections begins to prepare for the
election after the ordinance is officially adopted.
